While the Boxer is among the top 10 most popular dog breeds in the United States, the Miniature Boxer is still a rare breed. This is a dog that requires near constant companionship in any home. They also love to be part of family activities with the downside being that they don’t do well when left to their own devices for long periods of time. So you can depend on this pooch to alert you and your family to any situation he feels might be threatening. While they are non-aggressive, the Miniature Boxer is devoted to their families and can prove to be a formidable guardian if they feel their pack is threatened. These beautiful hybrids are social creatures that get along well with kids, other animals, and even other family pets. Of course, there are some tendencies that all Miniature Boxes share. Depending on the breeder, there are a few potential parents that can be used in a mix and each one brings along their own set of quirks and traits. As a result, the Miniature Boxer will not necessarily be a carbon copy of his full-sized parent, but rather a new pup that inherits some of the traits (especially in the behavior department) from other breeds in the mix. In fact, the compact version of the Boxer dog is actually a hybrid or designer dog that was developed by crossing several purebreds to achieve a certain appearance. Despite what his name implies, the Miniature Boxer is not a scaled-down version of that well-loved German working dog that we all know and love. The breed has won Best in Show at the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show four times, in 1947, 1949, 1951, and 1970. The last of the four was Dorian, and he won the Working Group at Westminster in 1937. Lustig sired 41 American champions, and Utz sired 35. The next two were Lustig and Utz, and each sired dozens of champions. Ten of his puppies were imported to America and became champions or were the ancestors of champions. They’ve even been nicknamed “the Four Horsemen of Boxerdom.” The first was Sigurd, born in Germany in 1929. Four dogs, in particular, are considered the foundation of the American Boxer. But these dogs didn’t reach any real degree of popularity until the late 1930s. The Boxer, as we know the breed today, was first imported to the U.S. Boxers Were Relatively Late Arrivals to America However, it was in Germany that the breed developed into the remarkable dog we know today. Most experts agree that this smaller Bullenbeisser, from northeast Belgium, is the direct ancestor of the modern Boxer. The breed spread all over continental Europe and England and can be seen in Flemish tapestries from the 16th century. Centuries later, these dogs were named for the ancient city of Molossis (in what is now Albania).įor centuries, the Bullenbeisser, the Boxer’s more recent ancestor, was used as a hunting dog for wild boar, bear, and deer. They were powerful, brave dogs, often used in war.
